Opening a CSV file makes MSI want Office 2000 SR-1 Premium disk (DATA1.MSI)

Hello!

I have a problem with a tiny CSV file
(http://lite2.myfabrik.com/get/01010010U9REsY/profile-high.zip from
Command & Conquer 3 demo) that keeps prompting MS Windows Installer to
want my MS Office 2000 SR-1 Premium disk DATA1.MSI.

I can hit cancel to skip it without problems that I saw. Or I can leave
the CD in the drive and it let use it. How do I get rid of this
annoyance? I tried making a new text file with "test" in a CSV file.
Excel did not prompt me to get the CD.

Any ideas? I am using Windows XP Pro. SP2 (IE 6.0 SP2) with all updates.
All updates for Office 2000 as well. Thank you in advance. :)

Your test file: Is the word "test" the only thing it contained? Just one
word, no commas, nothing else?

Correct. No tabs and spaces either. I don't know why that makes a
difference. I tried another CSV file from scratch with Notepad with:
test1,test2. That made the MSI pop-up come up. :(

OK. Are you trying to open the file by double clicking? Using File, Open in
Excel? Other method?

Both in Windows Explorer with double clicking and with Excel's File
Open. It doesn't seeem to matter which method. I forgot to mention that
Windows XP's event logs didn't show anything interesting except MSI
service started from this incident.

BTW, I am at work now so I can't play around with Excel 2000 for more
testings since it is on my home machine.

During the Office installation process, you have the option of installing
various converters and filters. That's exactly what they're called in the
install list. There's a converter for csv files. I suspect yours is not
installed. So, open control panel, choose Add/Remove Program, scroll down to
Microsoft Office, click the "Change" button or whatever it's called, and
check the list of features already installed.

I will check that out later tonight. I am pretty sure I have those
Office 2000 converters installed. I even have 2007 converters installed.

As long as I've got your attention, are there still any forums around for
WinFax tech help, even if it's from users?  The Symantec site used to have
one, but it seems to be gone, and I'd like to know whose decision it was to
remove it, where he/she lives, and where their kids go to school.

Not that I know of except Symantec's support site (if it it still there).

I was correct. Everything under "Converters and Filters" are installed. :(

Do children or other saboteurs use this computer? People who mess things up
and then claim they don't know how it happened, sort of like politicians
testifying in court? If yes, I'd back up all the data, reformat the hard
disk, and reinstall the OS. But, that's just me.

If my computer was having this problem, I'd try importing the CSV file into
Access. If that works, you could always export it to another type of file
that Excel would be happy with.

Or, uninstall & reinstall Office.

Nope. Just me. I can tell you Office installation is pretty old (4/4/2004).

Yeah, if it gets worse or I get desperate. :)
