In word when you are in the open folder window you can preview the insided
of .doc files and decide which to open.

In Excel under the same conditions the message " no preview available.

Is there a way to do the same with .xls as with .doc files?

Open your workbook
File|Properties|Summary Tab
Check that "Save preview picture"
at the bottom.

You must save the workbooks with the preview enabled.

File>Properties>Summary "save preview picture".

Checkmark it then Save.
