Cannot open more than one Excel file

I can open an existing excel file with no problem. However, if I try to
open another excel file while that first is still open, the first excel file
ends up "pasting" some type of link to the file I tried to open into a cell.
Not a true
link, but it pastes the path (C:\mydocuments...etc.). In other words, I
cannot open more than one excel document at a time.

Any help?

Yes, it paste the path in the cell of the current open Excel workbook. The
cell I was last in.

I'll be in the workbook. If I go to "file, open.." it will open the other
excel workbook, but if I open it through explorer (as I usually do), it will
paste the path to the cell in teh worksheet.

This is Office/Excel 2007, and only started happening after I made a change
in the registry by adding some sort of "%1". That solved all sorts of excel
problems
(like not opening at all, error messages, etc.), and now it works fine -
except this one issue.

I don't have Excel 2007 so cannot test.

Perhaps one of the 2007 users will jump in.

Exactly where did you make the Registry change upon advice from where?

I followed these instructions from microsoft (which do not seem exclusive to
Excel 2007). Once I did this, everyting worked, except I got the pasting
problem when opening new files. It could this did not cause the problem, but
it's the only thing it happened after applying this fix. Could be it existed
already but I couldn't see it...after all, I wasn't able to open existing
excel files until I did this fix.

Those instructions include 2002, 2003 and 2007 and are one of a couple of
standard fixes for the "file not found" message.

I prefer to leave the registry alone and change the command line in Tools>Folder
Options>File Types or just re-register Excel.

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

But......the pathname in a cell is strange behaviour no matter how you open a
workbook.
