Hi,

Currently when I am viewing a spreadsheet in excel and I want to open a
different spreadsheet they open in the same window which I find awkward.  I
would prefer for the 2nd spreadsheet I open to start a new instance of excel
so I can flick between the two on the taskbar.  Is there a setting that
controls this?.  I'm using Excel 2003 on XP Pro.

Thanks

Paul

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I don't think I explaned myself too well as
that option is already checked.  I need a totally separate instance of excel
to open for each spreadsheet  I open.  This used to happen on my old PC.
For example, if  I open 3 spreadsheets I want them to each open in new excel
windows.  I have dual monitor and I want to have one version of excel on one
monitor and one on the other.

Thanks

This may work...

You can change this setting:
Tools|Options|General tab|Ignore other applications (check it)

Be aware that one side effect of having this setting checked is sometimes you
can't open a file by double clicking on it in explorer.  (toggle it back and
that should be fixed.)

This shows up for workbooks that have spaces in their name or path:
c:\my documents\excel\testworkbook.xls
or
c:\test of workbook2.xls

Cannot find C:\my, then more "Cannot find ..." messages.

It's more trouble than it's worth (for me, anyway).

If I want a second instance of excel, I'll just use:
windows start button|run
excel
then file|Open to open my file.

But I rarely want separate instances of excel.

That's fixed it, thank you Sir.

Open both workbooks,  then right click on a blank area of the taskbar.
Select "tile windows vertically".  This may give you what you want.
