It sounds like you normally have Excel set to use Transition Navigation
Keys.....which makes Excel behave like Lotus 1-2-3.
Try this
From the Excel main menu:
<tools><options><transition tab>
Check: Transition navigation keys
Does that help?

If Tom is willing to let Excel be Excel, instead of Excel peeking through a
1-2-3 mask.....you're absolutely right.
