I have the same problem with Excel 07 on Vista and it is becomming more
frequent.  When you start the application a blank window appears without the
normal Excel header bar, but with an out-of-focus top bar with 3 icons where
you can display a different magnification of the blank screen.  The same
blank screen
occurs if you simply try to open an existing spreadsheet.  After rebooting
the computer a couple of times, Excel usually starts normally.

I have seen the same thing occassionally.  Not sure what causes it.  I have
been able to just close the program without rebooting and opening it again
and the problem has just gone away...

Sadly it is becoming more frequent and simply closing Excel down doesn't help
me.  Its a reboot of the new laptop and even then that doesn't always work.
As Diane says, the Excel window opens with the bottom bar of a normal excel
window opening at the top of a blank page, but it seams to be "out of focus"
and fuzzy.  This is getting frustrating.

Try hitting the minimize button to see if that helps. It worked for my
boss.

I've tried that, but it doesn't work for me sadly.  It simply reopens as
before - blank and fuzzy.  Thanks for the response though.

try this

remove or rename this file from this folder (HTML.XLAM)

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\Library\HTML.XLAM"

It is the "The Internet Assistant Wizard"

works for me!

I've been having the same problem on two different Vista machines.  I
put a screenshot of the screen here:  http://www.unc.edu/~scorcher/excel/
I may open a support request with Microsoft on this one.

I had this problem on a comptuer today.  Check to see if you are using
"Logitech QuickCam software" from the Vista machine and the problem
cleared.  I'm planning on trying to contact Logitech to see if they
know about this issue.  I installed it on another computer and it
created the problem too.

I meant to say I uninstalled the "Logitech QuickCam software" and then
the problem cleared.  I have sent in a support request with Logitech.
Hopefully they can patch the program or get with Microsoft to fix it
or Excel.

Thank you!

I also had this problem on two different Vista computers.  The one thing
they had in common -- I was sharing my new Logitech QuickCam® for Notebooks
Pro between the two machines.

Uninstalling the Logitech QuickCam Software solved the problem.  I did not
remove the Logitech Camera Driver Software - it does not conflict, and I am
still able to use the camera with Windows Live Messenger.
