Incompatible Excel 97-2000 and 2007

1. Created Excel file in 97-2000 version with links (copy paste links)
2. Another user opens the file sitting in a network drive, amends it and try
to save it. Gets an error message that say something like "Some formulas in
this workbook is linked to other workbooks that are closed. When this
formulas are recalculated in earlier versions of Excel without opening the
linked workbook, characters beyond the 255 characters......"
4. User has choice of saving it in MS Excel 2007 or 97-2000 format
3. If user clicks "Continue" and saves under 97-2000 format, original file's
links will be broken.

Did you intentionally misnumber steps 4 and 3?

I tried with Excel 2003 (earliest version I have installed) and cannot
recreate this problem.
