Whenever excel shows a window to ask me something the text appears as black
on gray and the rest of the inside of the window is white. This makes the
window look wrong. This only appears in excel 2002 and not in word or
powerpoint. If I login as another user of the same computer the problem has
disappeared. I've tried reinstalling office and changing the screen. This
really puzzles me and I hope someone can hel me with this.

Check in Control Panel / Display under your login. Look at Display
Properties/Appearance. For some reason they may be different for your login
than they are for the other user logins.

I have tried different combinations of styles in the display section of the
control panel, even reverting back to windows classic instead of xp-style.
Nothing happens. I have reserched some further and found that starting excel
in safe mode through Start, Run and typing excel.exe /safe does repair the
problem. I hope this narrows it down a bit but it does not solve my problem.

You said Excel runs fine under other logins. Sounds like a Windows issue
with your login. Starting Excel in safe mode, as far as I know, will ignore
your login settings.

Thanks Tyro,

What makes it more strange then is the fact that the problem only surfaces
in Excel, not in word or other office programs, even when i'm logged in as
myself. It doesn't solve the problem of course but it really looks like a
weird interaction of excel, windows and some settings of my account.
I've tried disabling add-ins but that doesn't help either.

Strange.......
