excel opens pst and adobe files

when i open an excel file excel also attempted to open my archive.pst
file and a couple other non-related pdf files.

Why might this be and how can i fix it?

Maybe, if you stored the files in the XLStart folder, Excel will try to open them. Check Tools /
Options.... General tab, At Startup, "Open all files in"
