I have an excel 2003 file that was password protected to open.  Is there a
way to reset this?   The employee left
a few months ago and this wasnt on his list.  We are also attempting to
reach him as well.  Just in case we cant. \
what could we try.\\

regards

You could search google for password removers.

http://www.lostpassword.com/

is one.  (I've never used it.)
