change sheet colour

Does anyone know how I can change the sheet colour from eye-piercing white to
something with a slight shade of colour. Crucially I want to do this without
losing the gridlines. I tried using the Fill tool but gridlines disappear.

I don't think you can do it without using the Fill background, which as you
know will hide the gridlines.

Use a light background color and thin borders on all cells.
