Why is it picking multiple columns - Excel 2007

When I click on a cell, it selects 8 cells. How do I reset it to only pick a
column to work with?

Maybe you have merged cells.

Select that group of 8 cells
Rightclick|Format Cells|Alignment tab|Uncheck Merge Cells
