Open a workbook also opens "Book1.xls"

Oscar W - 18 Mar 2008 18:13 GMT Hi all,
I wonder if it is possible to stop Excel from opening a copy of "Book1.xls" everytime a workbook is opened. (I.e. I just want to open the required workbook, not simultaneously open a copy of "Book1.xls" as well).
Thanks, Oscar
JP - 18 Mar 2008 18:20 GMT Not sure what you mean. When I double-click on an XLS file in Windows Explorer, book1 doesn't open, only the requested workbook. If you want to start Excel without opening a workbook, try the /E switch. For example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e

Oscar W - 18 Mar 2008 21:02 GMT To clarify my question/problem:
When I double click on any Excel file in Explorer, Excel first opens a new, empty workbook (called Book1 - the normal empty workbook) and then also opens the workbook that I actually double clicked on.
(I don't have anything in my XLStart folders, so that is not the problem).
Thanks, Oscar

Try to find that file and/or folder(s) using Windows search.

I'd use windows start button|search to look through all XLStart folders.
You may have files in a folder you didn't know about.

Try this.................
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types
If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.
In Command line the path should be similar to this....
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e
You must have the double quotes and the <space>/e prevents a new blank book from opening.
Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]
Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

Hi guys, I experience the same thing as Oscar does and I have the settings as Gord presented. Any other guesses?
Regards,
Dave Peterson - 19 Mar 2008 13:40 GMT Did you look for multiple XLStart folders?

JP - 19 Mar 2008 13:52 GMT Did you see Dave's post? Do a Windows search for the book, and for multiple XLSTART folders.

Yes, but I only have one XLStart folder. Any other guesses what could cause it? I
JP - 19 Mar 2008 16:11 GMT Did you close the workbook, then close and restart Excel and see if it happens again?
Sorry, can't think of anything else.

Dave Peterson - 19 Mar 2008 17:28 GMT Not trying to be too irritating. But if you upgraded to xl2003 from other versions, you may want to look again for multiple XLStart folders.
How did you search for it/them?

Oscar W - 20 Mar 2008 11:49 GMT JP, Dave & Wesslan,
I found that the problem is caused by an Add-In that both Wesslan & I have. If it is disabled, Excel can open only one workbook!
Thanks for your efforts!
Best, Oscar

Was it in your XLStart or was it turned on via Tools|Addins?

Oscar W - 20 Mar 2008 18:35 GMT The add-in was provided by our employer, to automate creation of certain graphs etc. It was initiated via Tools | Add-Ins.

Sometimes, it's good for google to know if it's a commercial addin. Then the next victims may have it a bit easier to find answers.

racingmymustang@yahoo.com - 21 Mar 2008 03:53 GMT I realized you fixed this, but if you run Excel from a shortcut right click on shortcut, hit properties and add /e (stands for empty) to the end of the command (Target). Like below. Gord hit on it with the file types, but any shortcut used supercedes the file open settings. I use the below in a batch file to open excel empty when the PC is restarted.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e
