Open a workbook also opens "Book1.xls"

Hi all,

I wonder if it is possible to stop Excel from opening a copy of
"Book1.xls" everytime a workbook is opened. (I.e. I just want to open
the required workbook, not simultaneously open a copy of "Book1.xls"
as well).

Thanks,
Oscar

Not sure what you mean. When I double-click on an XLS file in
Windows Explorer, book1 doesn't open, only the requested workbook.
If you want to start Excel without opening a workbook, try the /E
switch. For example:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e

If the file is really named book1.xls (not book1 without an extension), then I'd
close excel and use windows start button|search to find book1.xls and then
delete it (or move it).

To clarify my question/problem:

When I double click on any Excel file in Explorer, Excel first opens a
new, empty workbook (called Book1 - the normal empty workbook) and
then also opens the workbook that I actually double clicked on.

(I don't have anything in my XLStart folders, so that is not the
problem).

Thanks,
Oscar

Check Tools>Options, General tab, "At startup, open all files in", is
there anything there?

That folder is also empty.

I'd follow Dave's suggestions.

Try to find that file and/or folder(s) using Windows search.

Depending on your Excel upgrade path, you may have more than one XLStart folder.

I'd use windows start button|search to look through all XLStart folders.

You may have files in a folder you didn't know about.

Try this.................

Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e

You must have the double quotes and the <space>/e prevents a new blank book from
opening.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

Hehe Oscar...

Hi guys, I experience the same thing as Oscar does and I have the
settings as Gord presented. Any other guesses?

Did you look for multiple XLStart folders?

Did you see Dave's post? Do a Windows search for the book, and for
multiple XLSTART folders.

JP and Dave,

Yes, but I only have one XLStart folder. Any other guesses what could
cause it? I

Did you close the workbook, then close and restart Excel and see if it
happens again?

Sorry, can't think of anything else.

Yeah have even rebooted the computer, but it is still the same.
Perhaps have to wait till I upgrade to the next software (have xl
2003). :)

Not trying to be too irritating.  But if you upgraded to xl2003 from other
versions, you may want to look again for multiple XLStart folders.

How did you search for it/them?

JP, Dave & Wesslan,

I found that the problem is caused by an Add-In that both Wesslan & I
have.
If it is disabled, Excel can open only one workbook!

Thanks for your efforts!

Best,
Oscar

What was the addin?

Was it in your XLStart or was it turned on via Tools|Addins?

The add-in was provided by our employer, to automate creation of
certain graphs etc.
It was initiated via Tools | Add-Ins.

Ah.  Thanks for the info.

Sometimes, it's good for google to know if it's a commercial addin.  Then the
next victims may have it a bit easier to find answers.

I realized you fixed this, but if you run Excel from a shortcut right
click on shortcut, hit properties and add /e (stands for empty) to the
end of the command (Target). Like below. Gord hit on it with the file
types, but any shortcut used supercedes the file open settings. I use
the below in a batch file to open excel empty when the PC is
restarted.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e
