Hello,

I would like excel to automaticly generate ordinals for me, actualy
autofill..

in format:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
etc.

but with the dots, it will autofill if there are no dots but I need excel to
autofill ordinals with dots like I wrote...

Can someone help please?

Thanks

Try using a custom number format

Select the first number

From the Excel Main Menu:
<format><cells><number tab>
Category: Custom
Type: 0.
Click [OK]

Now try using the autofill.

1. would extend down like this
2.
3.
etc

Note: the dots wouldn't actuall exist in the
cell values....but they WILL display.

Does that help?
Post back if you have more questions.

It should work.

Yes I did select column. If i put dot after number it just copy series for
me like:
1.
2.
3.
1.
2.
3.

and if I dont put dot, it continues series like it should

1
2
3
4
5
6

so

<format><cells><number tab>
Category: Custom
Type: 0.
Click [OK]

didnt help me, i hope I did it right... can you make one excel file that do
what I asked so maybe i realize where I did wrong...

Thanks

Just checking....

In this line of the number formatting:
Type: 0.

That's 0 followed by a period.
(you need to enter the period)

Does that help?

If I put
1 .
2 .
3 .
it will work like that... but that is not what I need, I need dot to be
after numbers without space between..

Did I understand your question?

Thanks

Hi Borat
It looks like the formating is working.
Type 1 and next cell below it type 2 then select both cells with the bottom
right corner and drag down.
Post back if it still not working.

No, if I put

1.
2.

that it gives me

     1.
     2.
     1.
     2.
     1.
     2.
     1.

     ... but if I put

     1
     2

it works, but I need that dot after numeber because that is how we
write ordinal numbers.

     so I need
     1.
     2.
     3.
     4.
     5.
     6.
     7.
     etc.

Borat,
if its just a formatting problem,
- then drag your numbers by themselves (you already have that part easy
enough)
- highlight the column
- right click on the highlighted part
- click format cells
- click custom
- in the Type box use just type 0.
- the sample should show you what you want to see
- click ok the column should all have numbers with . behind them

hope that works for you.

Yes it works on my computer, but you must not hold down the Ctrl key to drag
down.
Good luck

maybe you can try this:
First,autofill
1
2
3
...

in column A

Second,   autofill
.
.
.
...

in column B

Third, type "=A1&B1" in column C and then autofill.

does this work?
