I want to break a link in a given workbook. Edit > Links > etc. But the
"Break link" button is missing. What's happening here?

I bet you're using at least two different versions of excel.  

The version that you used that had the Break Link button is newer than the
version that you're using without the Break Link button.

You may want to get Bill Manville's FindLink program:
