On my computer at work I have the default font set for a True Type font
called Arial Terminal.  It's a fixed width Arial font that I like for
spreadsheets.  I've changed it in Tools > Options > General.  But when I
open Excel, the font is set to regular Arial, the proportional spaced font,
which I absolutely despise, even though Excel still shows Arial Terminal as
the default font in Options.  If I click on File > New and open a new
spreadsheet, the font is Arial Terminal.  In the registry in HKCurrentUser >
Software > Microsoft > Office > 11.0 > Excel > Options, the font there is
Arial Terminal.  Can anyone suggest why Excel insists on using Arial,
instead of the font I have selected?

Bit of a guess, but I understand Excel stores your selected tool bar
settings in a file called something like "Excel11.xlb", in somewhere
like:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft
\Excel

Although this will vary based on your set up.

It might be that this file is corrupt?

You could consider trying to find a .xlb file on your machine and
renaming it excel11.old. Open Excel, amend the default font and then
see if that works?

If not, just restore the original filename.

Good luck!

Excel stores the default Font setting in the Registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options

Right-side key  Font

What value do you have there?  Mine is the hateful  Arial, 10

Perhaps you do not have permission to alter the Registry?

I checked the registry, and the correct font is set there.  I do have
admin privileges on my machine.

I tried renaming excel11.xlb to excel11.xlb.sav and restarting Excel, but I
didn't think of then setting the default font again.  I'll give it a try.
Thanks.

Hi,

Perhaps the excel file is damaged or something. If necessary, I think
you can try a utility called Advanced Excel Repair to repair your
Excel xls file. It works rather well for my corrupt Excel xls files.
Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/aer/
