This is an Excel group rather than Outlook Express, but in OE click on
Tools | Options | Security tab, and then UNCHECK the option "Do not
allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a
virus".

Click OK and then you should be able to attach and receive Word and
Excel files.

Hope this helps.

"wonder why they just didnt tell me"

MS would not recommend that you leave yourself vulnerable as you have done by
unchecking that security function.

Your OE will now allow "all" attachments to be opened or saved, harmful or not.

I believe you can keep that security by creating exclusions for designated file
extensions but I don't use OE so can't say how.

If you have anti-virus software that scans everything coming in, then
you are not totally vulnerable. Leaving the setting as it is means
that you cannot download these attachments sent to you, and I'm sure
this was introduced as a panic reaction to early viruses.
