Referencing Dates with the MATCH formula

I am finding the MATCH formula to be a little unpredictable when used
with dates:

Sometimes it works as I would expect. For example:
A
Date, Mar-08,Feb-08,Jan-08
Bob Phillips - 13 May 2008 09:11 GMT
