"Subtotal" grayed out.

I want to insert subtotals in an Excel 2007 table but the icon is grayed
out.  The 'group' or 'ungroup' icons are active.  Appreciate any ideas.

Got my own answer.  Converted the table by using 'format to range' and now
subtotals can be entered.  Although I understood tables can have automatic
subtotals, I obviously read the literature incorrectly.

... Marching on ...
