All of a sudden, I am unable to open Excel files from Windows Explorer. I
have to open Excel and then open files from within Excel. Any ideas as to
why this might happen?
Thanks.

<Tools> <Options> <General> tab,
And *UNCHECK* "Ignore Other Applications".

Try Tools / Options / General Tab / Uncheck 'Ignore Other Applications'

And if that doesn't work, maybe...
Close Excel (both instances) and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver
The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
