Blank checkboxes on query

I have a form linked to an Access database.  It contains several sections
that are supposed to be hidden unless corresponding checkboxes are checked.
When I first set up the conditional formatting, the sections remained hidden
even after a box was checked, and I guessed that this was because the value
in the database doesn’t change until the form is submitted.  To get around
this I added a separate checkbox to the form, and used a rule to change the
value of the checkbox in the database to match.  This worked for input, but
now I have a problem when I query.  The checkboxes all come up blank, and
users can’t see which sections were filled out.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

You should first verify that you are using the correct value for checked/unchecked in your conditional formatting. These values can be anything. Typical values are (please note casing): true/false, 1/0, True/False, etc.
