Since InfoPath is a thick client, a form designed in InfoPath will have
to be run in InfoPath. Sorry to say, but this is how it is. Users
travelling to your page to fill out this form would be required to have
InfoPath installed.

As for writing to an SQL Table, this is insanely easy with InfoPath's
User Interface. When you go to create a new form (using the task pane)
select "New from data connection". This will now bring you to a wizard
that will allow you to connect to an SQL data base or Microsoft Access
database.

If you want to build an Infopath form and then build a web page similiar to
the form I recall seeing a couple of docs on this.  Probably just do some
searching on Infopath and web pages.

Also, you are looking for reference material, there are a couple of books
out there decent about learning the basics of Infopath, Beginning Infopath
2003, Programming MS Infopath A developers Guide and then there's
Professional Infopath 2003. My sitation is I'm trying to learn how to use
VS.Net to build my forms and I've yet to find an advanced book with real
world examples.  

I've also been going through the MSXML 5.0 chm file that is office
installation directory.  

Finally somebody suggested I order the Fabrikam 3.1 learning center which
takes a fictitious company and builds real world solutions.  I just got it
and it looks promising.  It comes with a VPC image with examples of how
implement solutions using Infopath as well as other office products.  You can
find it by searching for fabrikam 3.1 on the ms website.
