I have never used infopath before and would like to know if it would work for
a project I am working on.  If I design a form in infopath, can it be used as
a "database" so to speak, in which it would automatically assign a sequential
number to the form each time a user filled it out?  Would I then be able to
take all the forms and search by specific fields and compile reports by each
field?

Once a form linked to a database is submitted it can assign it a unique ID.

In answer to your second question as long as you connect the form to a
database, and add query fields to your "search" form and then query the
datasource you can search on ANY field you have added
