Having trouble with the quality of the images when doing an 'Insert >
Picture > From File' to add basic imagery to the form layout. I have
tried gif, jpg, png, tif and even bmp but all are displayed very
poorly. Hopefully I am missing something simple here. Anyone seen this
and remedied it? Many thanks.

Check what DPI your image is set to (use Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or another useful graphics app). InfoPath wants images to be at 96-DPI. Most image apps like to use 72-DPI (an older size for older monitors). Some use 300-DPI (designed for print). The DPI makes a big difference.
