I wish to create an InfoPath form where the data source is an Access database
that contains only linked tables.  If I create a local copy of the linked in
the Access database the link will work, but that table will not be current
whereas the linked tables always contain current data.

Hi
To access the current Access database you need to add database as data
connection to the InfoPath. To add database to your InfoPath you need to do
in the following way

1.    Open the form in design mode
2.    Go to Tools menu
3.    Select ‘Data Connections’
4.    Click on ‘Add’ button to add database

Thanks for answering - I can link to a database just fine, but the database
itself has linked tables.  Infopath will only recognize local tables.  Do you
know a way around this?

Susie, a workaround is to create a table as a query in access that includes
the fields of interest. Then from infopath you can link to that. It has
worked for me with the same problem.
