Embedding instructions in a form

Is there a way to embed instructions for filling out the form w/i the form
itself? I need something more extensive than placeholders or field tips. I
wanted a button that you can click that triggers a help screen specific to
that form, or something similar.

You can use a custom task pane for this. Try this InfoPath lab:
