If have set a default date on a date picker to use the now() function.
However, this overwrites a date if it already exists in the node (this is a
repeating table). Any one know how to stop this happening

This is a known issue when you retrieve your data from a database.  To
circumvent this, use a rule to set the date only when the field is blank.
Place that rule on some event such as when you open the form and/or when a
new row is added to the table.
