How change worksheet axis to alpha numerical not both numer

the axis/titles/names of my excel worksheets have changed from alpha
numerical to both numerical. The top left hand cell reads R1C1 not A1.  I'm
using Excel 2000. As something of a novice user this is confusing for me. How
do I change it back?
