Please go easy on me because I'm brand new to Excel.  I am trying to find a
way to 'select' a date to populate a cell rather than having to 'type' it in.
Is there a way I can use the Data Validation drop-down function to call up
an interactive calendar from which I can pick a date?  If not, is there
another way it can be done?

Do a search on "+ excel calendar add-in", and you'll find what you are
looking for!

hi,
you can use the built in calendar control.
Ron de Bruin explains it well at his site.

Here is how I would do it. Select Tools -> Customize -> Toolbars (tab) and
check Control Toolbox. This will bring up the Control Ttoolbox Toolbar. Click
the icon that  looks like a Hammer and Wrench. From the list choose Microsoft
Date and Time Picker Control. Your cursor will change to a cross hair that
you can use to draw the control (the same way you would draw a rectangle
using click and drag). Right click the control and select Properties. Add a
cell reference (such as A1) to the Linked Cell property. Now to get out of
design mode click on the Triangle & Ruler icon on the control tollbaox
toolbar.
