The saved book opens, but nothing shows up. If I first open Excel and then
open the saved book - then all sheets shows up with it's content.

Why do I have to open Excel first on this pc?

I have backed up the saved books and tried it on an another pc and
everything shows up normal, without open Excel first.....hmmmmm.

I have reinstalled Excel 2003 and upgraded it from Microsoft.

Try the usual fix for this.

Tools>Options>General  Uncheck "Ignore Other Applications"

If no joy with that................

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.

In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe" /regserver(quotes required)>OK.
