I have been using XP on a laptop which has suffered a major problem. Put the
wrong disc in and reformatted losing all my data - Silly me.
Any way it was quite old and I wanted a new one anyawy so bought a new one
running Vista and put Office 2007 on it..
I had saved my spread sheets on an external drive. These are shown as .wks
files and when I try to open them in Vista it says Excel cannot open files of
this type.
I imagine the problem is easily solved but this Silver Surfer is looking for
step by step instructions on how to do it !!

Sounds like you have "Works" files. perhaps you may reinstall Works? Or
have someone with Works, load them and Save As something compatible with
Excel?

Excel 2007 does not open .wks files. Previous versions of Excel, however,
do.  I'm not familiar with the structure of a .wks file. Perhaps it would be
an option for you to open your files on another machine with Excel 2003 and
save them as Excel files (.xls)  Then you could open those on the new
machine in Excel 2007.
