Is there a way to mark protected cells by automatically creating a colored or
patterned background for the protected cell?

Select the range/sheet you want colored.
Goto>Format>Conditional formating.
Select "Formula Is" and enter:
=CELL("Protect",A1)
select "Format" and place a nice format through the options available
Ok out.

Instead of "A1" in your formula you will use the active cell in you selection.

I hope this helps
