make custom buttons for macros on quick access bar excel 2007

It used to be relatively simple to add a macro to the toolbar, make/edit a
custom button image to go with it, and voila.

Now it seems you can only accomplish with a lot of whoops, programming
skills, and then still end up withsoemthing much less easy to use than the
Excel 2003 and earlier versions.

Am I missing something here? Is MS going to make some change to fix this in
the future?  What the heck was MS thinking?
