Using Excel 2002 on XP SPII, HP Pavilion 7850 computer.  When I open my excel
files, which may have been created in previous versions of excel or in
different, I get 6 different excel windows title as:
1 - my filename
2 - UBSoftUpdate
3 - uuc
4 - SCANDISK
5 - CONFIG.BAK
6 - COMPATID

Even when I open a new document in excel, I still get 5 files (#2 - 5
above).  And if I recall. I had this same problem on my wifes old computer
running XP and Microsoft 2003.   Does anyone know why this is happening and
what I can do to prevent 5 or 6 files popping up everytime I open Excel?
Thank you

I'd check here first:

Tools|Options|General Tab
Make sure that the "at startup, open all files in" box is empty.
