i have an infinite # of extra columns (clicking on a row number and giving it
a border).  how can i delete all the extra columns?

You can't delete the extra columns, but you can hide them. Click the column
header of the first column you would like to hide, then while holding Ctrl
and Shift, press the Right Arrow key. This will select all of the columns you
want to hide. Right-click on this selection and choose Hide.

You cannot delete the columns and rows Excel has given you on a worksheet.

You can hide them by selecting and Format>Hide.
