Outlook Conflict with Adobe PDf Add-in : Safe Mode Needed

I was told when I purchased my Dell that there is a known conflict with
Acrobat Viewer and was given another PDF program to create and read PDF's.
Well, I didn't install it because Adobe seemed to be working fine. Yesterday
I tried creating a PDF from quickbooks and the whole thing crashed. Now, my
Outlook is closing prematurely (see other post). I was able to see that the
PDFMOUTLOOK add-in was causing problems and asked if I wanted to disable. I
said "yes" but it has not restored Outlook to functionality. How can I get
into Outlook in Safe Mode, where the add-in's are not started?

To start Outlook in safe mode:

1) Start > Run
2) Type: outlook.exe /safe
3) OK button

To disable the PDFMaker addin in Outlook, see:
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002sp3.htm#problems

Note:  PDFMaker only comes with the full Adobe Acrobat product and not the
reader.  If you are using Adobe Acrobat 7.0, it is generally best to
uninstall/reinstall the product and do a custom install.  This way you can
select not to install the Outlook addin.

Thank you .. Running safe mode produced the same (bad) result, Outlook
started and then ended. I would think that by uninstalled Acrobat, all would
be solved. there must be some piece of it left somewhere, if this is truly my
problem.

I tried the registry edit fix from the link you sent but that key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\PDFMOutlook.PDFMOutlook
was not present. Perhaps it is because I uninstalled Acrobat 7.0 altogether.

Dell acknowledged when I ordered the machine that there are some problems
with the Acrobat Reader and they provided a program called PDF Converter Pro.
Since I had used the Adobe reader and created PDF's for awhile with no
errors, I had not yet installed the substitute program.

Am I stuck in an impossible situation?

I looked at your other post and noticed that you describe that it closes
w/out throwing up any error dialogs.  That is strange.  Did Dell have you
look in the application event log to see why Outlook might be crashing?

Start > Run
Type: eventvwr.msc
ok button

Select/Highlight Application.  Look for things that have a yellow/red mark
next to them for Outlook.

As far as I can see, Dell does not provide any software support for my 2 week
old computer with 3 years of warranty, I haven't even asked them for help. I
had one error dialog once, out of the 30 times I tried getting in. The
PDFMoutlook was mentioned in that one dialog. I will try what you mention and
get back on. Thank you!

Two things:
1. Now Outlook is working and coming up, as it did, it said that my personal
folders were not closed properly and that my archive folders were not closed
properly.  I checked the Add-in manager and the new PDF software was there,
the Adobe PDF was not.
2. I ran eventvwr.msc and don't quite know what to look for to diagnose and
prevent this problem.  I wonder if I can reinstall Adobe Acrobat Pro or not.
3. I just don't trust that all is well until I figure out what happened and
prevent it from happening again.

1)  If it mentions anything about running the Inbox repair tool, it means
that it wants you to run scanpst.exe on the *.PST file(s) you have.  The
*.PST file(s) will be located in a hidden/system folder under one of these
locations:

\documents and settings\<userid>\application data\microsoft\outlook

\documents and settings\<userid>\local settings\application
data\microsoft\outlook

2 & 3) Basically if you post the text of the "yellow" or "red" items for
Outlook, one of your peers in this group might be able to give you an idea
what happened.

As for reinstalling Acrobat Pro and if its version 7.0, I would uninstall
the other and give 7.0 another try.  I can't recommend enough that you do a
custom install and lose the Outlook addin.
