Is it possible to specifically identify receipts in a rule, other than by
looking for the word "read" in the title?
Roady [MVP] - 20 Feb 2007 12:48 GMT
No, that is not possible as there is no real need to do that. External
read-receipts will be received as normal mail messages anyway. For internal
messages you can set Outlook to automatically process the receipts in the
Tracking options.

Thanks, but what I am trying to do is set up a rule to move all "read
receipts" messages to a folder using a rule? If I set up the rule to look for
the word "read" in the title I may accidentally move other messages.

If you want to do this on internal receipts you'll break its functionality.
Why not process them automatically?

I'm not distinguishing internal and external (in fact I'm not sure what the
relevance is - I'm using OL on a pop account so presumably its only
external). Perhaps "automatically" is exactly what I want. Can you explain
further?

Many thanks for your help and interest.

In the case of a POP3 account it is not possible as the messages will arrive
like normal email messages and not special receipts which can be processed.
Rules are the only way.

Roady,

What Alan meant, and indicated in subject title (and what I need to do
also), is to have read receipts automatically go into a different folder than
the main inbox USING A RULE.  Even when I tell it to move when it has "read"
in the subject, I cannot get it to move.

In the rules, am I missing something that means, "if this is a read receipt,
move it to <name> folder"

Thank you.

Yes, I knew what he was asking. What part of the answer don't you
understand?
It's impossible to give you any indication in where you go wrong without any
configuration information.

Sorry.  XP2 w/Outlook 2003

See below for the part of the thread that I'm talking about.

Although you indicated to "process automatically" and that "rules are the
only way," you didn't indicate how to put in the rule so that it would do
this.

Or, are you agreeing w/Alan that the only rule one can use is one that
filters only using the word "read" in subject line to write/run the rule?

It all depends on what kind of read receipts you get returned; are these
actual receipts (with special icon) or just an email message?
This depends a bit on the type of mail account you are using as well.

If your Read Receipts are just mail messages then you have to be creative
with a rule. Check by which words or other characteristics you can recognize
the receipt (probably more than just the word "read') and create a rule to
check by those characteristics as well.

If you get special Read Receipts you shouldn't move them by using a rules
because you'll end up breaking the message tracking on the sent item.
Automatic processing can be configured in Tools-> Options-> Email Options->
Tracking Options
