When I receive an e-mail with an Word attachment and I try and open the
attachment by double cliking...the attachment tries to open in Excel.  then I
get an error message that the format is not valid.  Is there a place in
Outlook where a setting has been corrupted and I can switch it back to make
sure a .doc file opens in Word?

If you save the attachment to the desktop and double-click on it, does it
open in word, or does it try to open in Excel there as well?

Right-click on the attachment and choose Open With. Select Word. Check the
box to always do the same with this file type.

thanks, but that doesn't seem to be an option in Outlook 2003.  the only
option when i write click is "open"...no "open with" option the way you get
when you have saved the document and you are seeing it in a folder.  Any
other idea of how to get to that "open with" option?
