I tried to run outlook for the first time on this computer. After running the
wizard, Outlook began to open, then I got an error message saying "The
operation failed" and the application closed. Now it says this every time I
try to  open Outlook and it immediately closes.

Dear Erin,

it seems that the Microsoft Outlook profile is corrupted.

Try creating a new user profile:

Maybe it helps.
