When I want to clean up an email w/ messy formatting, I use the 'Style' pull-down menu to select "Normal". The problem is that it only works if I apply a different (not Normal) style first, then apply Normal. Put another way it takes two steps: apply random style (say Header 3), then apply Normal. It does nothing if you apply Normal first. Strange? Perhaps, but we would have no way of testing since you neglected to give Outlook/Word version information.
