turn off email auto reply function

Denis - 14 Jul 2007 19:32 GMT I set an auto-reply while on vacation several months ago and have been unable to turn it off ever since. I use Outlook 2003 and my ISP is cox.net for the email address in question. Cox claims to have no auto-reply function so it must be in the Outlook somewhere. Please, please, help me find how to turn it off!
F. H. Muffman - 14 Jul 2007 21:21 GMT >I set an auto-reply while on vacation several months ago and have been >unable [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > it > off! Tools - Rules and Alerts is the most likely place.
To be 100% sure it's not Outlook, shut it down, open up task manager (control-shift-escape) to make sure outlook.exe not running on the Processes list, fire up hotmail or gmail or whatever free web based mail address you might have (create a new hotmail account if you need it) and mail yourself. If you get an autoreply, it isn't from Outlook.

Denis - 14 Jul 2007 22:30 GMT f.h. - I have several email accounts with Goddaddy that are fine. Cox is my high speed provider. They say they don't even have the function of auto-reply. Outlook help suggests they do have auto-reply, but it is not in rules as they suggest. Nor can I find it any other Outlook related areas. One hint says be in "Mail" and on the tools menu click "Out of Office Assitant" - that won't work for me since I do not use an Exchange Server, I have a PoP3 account with Cox and several with Godaddy. Sorry I didn't make that clearer in the original question.

So is this account a cox.net address? Rules is the only place it would be within Outlook unless you have an add-in of some kind. Have you gone through the steps I suggested to ensure that it is indeed Outlook (or something in it) causing the auto-reply?

Yes, this is a cox.net address (dmarque1@cox.net). Don't recall an add-in. Looked at current add-ins suggested in Outlook help and could not find any listed in my Control Panel Add/delete programs. I can run Email Acct test on all other email accts I have active and none auto reply except the cox.net email. But since I know that I used the Godaddy auto-reply for all others, and turned them off, that wouldn't be too surprising. The cox address would be the only one that I would have used either Cox (they claim no auto reply in their system) or OUtlook. Either they are lying, don't know (wonder, sometimes), or they used to have it and I was too late to turn it off. The hunt continues.

Because if you weren't, obviously it isn't an Outlook issue.
That said, look at the headers of the auto-reply. Look at the last Recieved: header reading from the top down. That will say where the message came from initially.

I will try your "shut down, run Hotmail test" but for reasons in last response, do think it is Outlook. Will advise.

Will advise. f.h. - I set up a yahoo acct. and emailed myself 3 times after confirming outlook was closed. I did not receive the auto - reply message. Open to any new suggestions. Thank you for responses so far.

Go to Tools - Options - Other - Advanced and click Add-ins and COM Add-ins (as I recall the buttons are listed) and reply back with what's listed there.
Also, just to verify, you said you have no rules listed under Tools - Rules and Alerts?

The messages were sent to my yahoo over the Cox.net high speed internet, no auto reply came with. I have now sent a message to the cox email address and the auto reply appeared. I sent to the cox email address from other accounts in Outlook and the auto reply appeared.
At the add-in manager under advanced options there are Zipform 5 outlook extension, exchange extensions property pages, and spamfighter helper outlook extension. Not checked is Fax server extension.
At COM add-ins is Spamfigter add-in. Unchecked are Itunes and Mailbuddy Outlook addin.
As to rules, I have rules for spam, spamfighter, 4 godaddy accts, and the 1 cox acct.
Thanks for staying with me.

I had you send a message from an external address to your cox.net address while Outlook was not running.
You did not get auto-replies to the three messages you sent.
I asked if you did get auto-replies once you started Outlook.
Did you?
> At the add-in manager under advanced options there are Zipform 5 outlook > extension, exchange extensions property pages, and spamfighter helper [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > 1 > cox acct. So there are 7 rules total?
Heck, lets try this. Uncheck *ALL* the rules so they won't be active. Send a message from the yahoo account. Do you get an autoreply?

I went back to Yahaoo to send message to cox email address with Outlook closed. When I cpened Yahoo, there was an auto-reply on the last test message I sent to Yahoo!
Then I sent test message to cox email address and no auto-reply. Resent yahoo to yahoo and got auto-reply again. Resent yahoo to cox and got auto reply at yahoo again.
I beleive cox and I need to have a discussion.

> I beleive cox and I need to have a discussion. I am not entirely sure who you need to have a discussion with, but I want clarification. 1) In Outlook, go to File-Exit. 2) Hit Control-Shift-Escape 3) Go to the Processes Tab and verify Outlook.exe is not running. if it is, hit End Process on it. 4) Once it is *not* listed there, fire up IE/Firefox/Opera/Whatever web browser of choice and sign into a web based email like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, whatever. 5) Mail the cox.net address. 6) Wait 10 minutes.
Did you get the auto-reply? Yes or no.
Like I said, look at the headers of the Auto-reply. The last Received: line reading from top to bottom will show you where the email originated from.

Outlook does not even appear in the process list. I went back to Yahoo, typed a message to cox.net and got an immediate auto-reply on Yahoo! I'm waitling per your request before re-opening Outlook. My prediction is the message will be there but not the auto reply! Will confirm in a few minutes.
Meantime, auto-reply in yahoo showed it came from dmarque1@cox.net
Have now opened Outlook, test message received, no auto-reply. As I said above, I will be in touch with Cox!
My thanks to you! You have everything you need to find my website, come by and say hello.
ZM - 08 Nov 2007 03:11 GMT Have microsoft outlook 2003. Senders are receiving an auto reply from years ago that won't turn off. Have exhausted the "troubleshooting" and "help" options. Please help not as computer saavy as this discussion indicates and wary about trying registry entry. zm

If I have done something wrong, I apologize. I gather the way I respnded was in error. Hopefully this is correct. I thank M.F. for staying with me as long as he/she did. I never did get a final reply. I hope my conclusions are correct but come away with some uncertainty. If you would at least confirm that bottom posting is what I am not now doing, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Denis - 15 Jul 2007 17:04 GMT I am pleased to advise that the problem has been found. In spite of whatever mistakes or errors I made duriing my first use of this system, through the efforts of f.h. we narrowed it down to Cox.net. In my previous many, many calls to cox about auto-responders and answerback systems, Cox claimed there were none on Cox. Today I reached a level up supervisor who walked through all the possible areas of settings where the problem could be coming from. Cox has a function called "Vacation" - and there was the message! My thanks to f.h. for the patience shown during my fumbling through the long exchange. Shutting down Outlook was the turning point! Thank you once again, and my apologies to those I offended with my "bottom posting" which I think I now understand. Feel free to email me at dmarque1@cox.net with your correction to my understanding and I promise you will not receive an auto-reply.

You didn't do anything wrong. In fact, USENET standard is to bottom post, that is, new data is added at the bottom of the message as opposed to the top of the message. This allows people to follow the conversation in an intelligible manner. The problem is that lazy people are not fond of the format because it involves work: you have to edit the post you're making so as to keep the salient points available in the single post, while removing as much of the extra text as possible, and when reading you have to scroll. People who have been involved in the thread who are against bottom posting get upset because they've already had to read everything, why should they be forced to keep reading.
It's a long standing argument on USENET, especially since Microsoft came in with a newsreader that, by default, ignored convention and stuck with top posting at a time when 99% of the newsreaders bottom posted.
I don't know why Milly felt the need to post on this thread without anything to add except starting a top post vs. bottom post flame war.
For more information on top posting vs. bottom posting, I'd look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style.

Your choice. No need for you to barge into this thread with 0 helpful advice except for flaming me for adhering to USENET standards.
BTW. You lied. You just answerd a bottom posted thread.
