The folder does contain junk mail - I've been having to delete them
individually! The command appears on the menu when I right-click but it is
"de-highlighted", i.e. unavailable. Thanks for responding.

What type of mail server? Exchange? POP?
First thing I would try is exiting outlook and going to Start - Run -
outlook /safe and seeing if you can do it then.
If not, a Detect and Repair from the Help menu might be in order, since
there isn't anything in the product to disable it, unless you're on an
Exchange server and the admins have disabled that function (assuming it even
is disableable).
