I have Outlook 2003. I just changed the PST from the pre 2003 format to the
uni code format. When I open Outlook I now see (3) instances of the Personal
Folder open. They are identical to each other. If I right click I do not have
the option to close. If I go into Data File Management I only show one data
file and it is the default. How do i close these other two instances of the
default data file?
You probably overwrote one .PST with another. Not only does that cause the
"ghost" .PSTs like you're seeing, but it's not necessary since you can put a
.PST file anywhere that you can access from your Windows profile (as long as
Outlook has read/write access to the file). Here are the fix instructions:

Thanks. The article talks about creating a new profile which I assume is the
user profile. Is that correct? If not is there a way to repair the outlook
portion of the user profile? Creating a new user profile is not really
desired in this case; but I don't really want to leave a corrupt one given
the problems this user has had.

You'd be creating a new Outlook profile, not a Windows user profile. Go to
Control Panel and find the Mail application (it's under User Accounts if
you're in Category View) and then click Show Profiles. You can create a new
profile there.
