Postings - different from email? how do they get to recipients?

I can send emails to recipients and file the emails in folders.

Or I can post a message to a folder - though who gets sent that posting? or
don't postings get sent until.... what?

Basic enough issue - but struggling to find help text! Many thanks

A post to a folder doesn't send a message to anyone, unless this is a public folder with a forwarding rule. It's like adding a new contact or task.
