After replying to an email I realized I forgot additional information and had
to reply once more but needed to keep our previous messages. I went through
the same procedure as my first reply but this time it was sent to myself and
I can only assume not to my recipient. Why did this happen? Am I correct in
assuming my recipient didn't receive it and will have to send again?

What did the failed delivery status notification (that message you got back)
say?  That might help explain what happened.

And, generally speaking, if you get a message that says the message was not
sent, then it wasn't received, but even that isn't set in stone since the
message could have read 'We haven't been able to send this message for 6
hours, but we will keep trying for 24 more.'

There wasn't a failed delivery status notification, the email that I replied
to was sent to my address instead. Looking over it again, I'm assuming that
since my message was the last sent in our conversation that it will just
automatically send to the last address present(which was mine). I guess from
now on if I need to reply for a second time in a row I will have to realize
to change the recipients address from my address to the correct one.

Thanks for your help

If you reply to your own reply, it only makes sense that your e-mail will be
the one in the To field, since the first reply was sent from you.  You'd have
to change the address manually, or use Forward instead of Reply.
