I use Outlook on several machines.  Sometimes it has been several weeks on
one machine before I move to another.  I copy the outlook.pst file onto a
memory stick and replace the outlook.pst file on the other machine.

Normally the machine that I switch to recognizes that the mail in the
outlook.pst file has been downloaded and only the newer messages will be
downloaded.  Sometimes this does not work and outlook wants to download all
the files on my earthlink account, which could amount to several hundred.

How does Outlook decide if a file in Inbox has already been downloaded?  Is
there some way I can flag the current contents of the inbox as downloaded?

The method you use is prone to cause problems. I'd look at an alternate
method to share the data. An IMAP account might suit you for email.

Unfortunately I have an established eartlink address that I want to keep and
I don't think IMAP is an option.

I actually have had pretty good luck moving the outlook.pst file from
machine to machine except for this occasional problem with redundant
downloads.

I would like to understand how outlook decides if a message has already been
downloaded.  Is it the timestamp, is there some id in the message???

I'm not sure on that. You will need to wait and see if anyone else knows or
look for documentation.
