Outlook 2003 in VISTA Home Premium - Sudden Major Problem

I received this error message this morning out of the blue:

>>>>>>>Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open Outlook window.   The set of folders could not be opened.  The server is not available.  Contact your administrator if this condition persists."<<<<

This happened after I ran Vista back-up on 8/18 in the early morning, but
that could have just been a coincidence, of course.

I surmise that an ost or pst file has become corrupt? Now what?

Thanks.

Do you connect to Exchange? If you do is the server available?
Try with anew profile via the Mail icon in Control Panel and just a POP
account.

Bill, thanks for taking the time to ponder my problem.

No, I don't connect to Exchange, since I'm using Outlook at home. And I have
the POP account, as always.

Could it be that the Archive file is too big? It is 50 MB or so. If I simply
delete the archive file (since I don't need the items in it anyway), won't
Outlook simply start a new one, and this time I can configure archiving to
delete items before they accumulate again? Wonder if I just need to delete
some items....thanks.

Your archive is tiny - leave it.
Try as I suggested with a new profile.
