I am using exchange 2003/Outlook 2003.
On one workstation all emails form external sources are shown in grey in
Inbox.
Outlook functionality is unaffected.

You mean in the email overview?
Check the Automatic Formatting settings in View-> Arrange By-> Custom...

I can't see anything here that helps me.  The categories are all checked and
have separate fonts attached.  I can't see anything that differentiates
between external and external emails.

Yes, look at the font settings. For which criteria do you have it configured
to show a grey font?
