I have two Toshiba laptops.  One is about a year or more older.  On the older
one when I exit Outlook the tasktray icon goes and the program is completly
shut down.  So far, normal. On the new one when I exit Outlook the tasktray
icon does not go away.  You can double click on the tasktray icon and it will
not run Outlook. HOWEVER, it still polls for new mail.  I know this becuase
when I return from a STANDBY state the Outlook window showing the progress of
SEND/RECIEVE has an error! statement.  Have I set something within Outlook
Options to cause this? Any ideas MVP's?  Thanking you kindly pre-emptively.

If you open Task Mngr, outlook.exe process will still be running.
Its usually caused by an addin or something else interacting with OL, eg
Fax/Sync/DTS software

Well that's just it DL, the Task Manager doesn't show it's running.  That's
why I mentioned that you can double click the tasktray icon and the program
won't run.  The polling process is still active but the program as a whole is
not.  You have to click the icon on the desktop to fully restore the program.
I don't know what add-ons could be present.  I don't use fax.  I don't know
what DTS is or what you mean by sync.  But thanks for the response.  BTW, it
didn't do this at the first, it started sometime after several months from
purchase.

Did you check the Processes tab?

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1.  PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2.  WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3.  Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4.  COM Add-ins.
5.  Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6.  Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Thank you Mr. Russ!  Several of those are suspect and I will look into them,
not that it's that big a problem, but I like to understand.  Now I'm
thinking, the older PC has the PDA software, the same virus software and it
does not act this way.  COM add in's.  Doesn't that show up somewhere?  Seems
to me you check that or that I have seen such listed.  ??  You know this too?

Depends on your Outlook version which you have yet to post.

You did put me on the right track.  I remembered where I saw COM Add-In's.
It's Tools/Options/Other/Advanced Options.  I stopped Outlook Backup Addin
and it stopped the issue.  There is also present Outlook Reminder Addin which
left running does not seem to pose the issue. Now I just need to decided if I
want to keep it off or on.  Thanks greatly!

If you disabled the MS outlook addin and that cured the problem, you have
some other issue.
The Backup addin will not on its own cause this issue.

I understand.  It is erractic now.  Mostly, the tasktray icon seems to
disappear when I  X or Exit, now, just today as I have been fooling with the
COM Addin's.  It hasn't done this for some time.  So I was led to believe I
had cured it.  But, once in a while it doesn't go away.  I tried disengaging
the Email plugin from AVG Free virus program and that didn't seem to do much.
There is also ADD IN MANAGER, possibly looking into that.  I will try to
compare the old laptop with this one's settings and see what may be
different.  Thanks!
