I'm wondering if the email received icon (displayed at the bottom right
corner of the screen) can be set so it only shows up when an email is
received in my inbox.  Right now it is displayed everytime an email goes to
my spam folder too and I seem to be getting more spam than legitimate emails.

Since Outlook doesn't have a spam folder, you must have an antispam add-in.
Thus, your incoming mail IS going to your Inbox and the flag is being
enabled.  Your spam scanner then moves the message from Inbox to SPAM.
Thus, Outlook is behaving normally and your antispam product is interfering
with that normal operation.
